PLAN PHASE CONTRAST SYSTEM - Phase contrast microscopes use an optical lighing technique where small phase-shifts of light pass through a transparent specimen and are converted into contrasting images, allowing the specimen to been seen without staining the slide. In changing microscopes from brightfield to Plan Phase contrast , the Plan Phase system is generally comprised of the following: 1) Phase focusing centering telescope eyepiece; 2) Four Plan Phase objectives: PH10x, 20x, PH40xR, and PH100xR with matching centerable annulus phase ring for each objective; 3) A separate iris diaphragm allows the user to switch back to normal brightfield viewing; 4) Swing out filter holder with 3 filters (frosted white, blue and green); and 5) Centering system for the optical path with screws or knobs, including the lamp, condenser unit, and head unit.
